The true meaning of planning

Sunday July 2, 2006 at 10:27 pm

For the DiDA course, I am required to do a large amount of structured planning.  Everything, almost every detail, must be planned and any deviation from your plans must be documented.  Some of it you are allowed - occasionally even encouraged - to do your own way.  But the rest of it is dictated to you - candidates are ‘told’ how to plan by the board… and if you dont like it, then tough.

We are given certain guidelines to follow.  Some ‘guidelines’ are stricter than others - for instance, we have to do a storyboard for movies and information points.  I don’t want to work like that, thats not how I work!  I want to do flowcharts and diagrams and map things as they come out of my head so I can refine them later.

Obviously, DiDA students are forced to conform to these ‘guidelines’, as failure to do so would result in failing the course.   However, I question the usefulness of plans that are forced upon us and dictated to us.

DiDA 50-second speed tour of Derby: Mk I

Wednesday June 14, 2006 at 10:35 am

For a dry-run of the DiDA Project, I am required to make a 50-second movie about my hometown.  The following video took around an hour to shoot and two-and-a-half hours to compile.  It was created in the unreliable Windows Movie Maker.  It is being posted here so I can test embedding within web pages.

Video not playing? Click here to download the movie. It’s WMV format - sorry to all you mac and linux users - I’ll have an mpeg in the media section soon.

orangeacid.net slips into LFC top 20

Monday June 12, 2006 at 2:48 pm

For some reason truely beyond my understanding, my website has managed to find its way into my school’s top-20 most visited websites.

I was informed this by the head of IT at LFC, who has taken to addressing me as ‘Mr orangeacid’ whenever he fancys a chat about my site.  I think he’s still unaware that he is referred to informally as ‘bazzaaaa!’.

It is beyond me how a personal, blog based site with barely enough content to keep anyone amused for more than five minutes has achieved this.  Surely it could only be the gallery or radio.blog.  I’m not complaining though, keep the visits coming and I’ll keep up the updates :D
